Coelia

Lindley , Gen . and Sp. Orch. pl. (1830), 36.

Laelieae . II, III, IV. Gr. koilos (hollow ). Lindley based the generic description on a drawing by the botanical artist Bauer who had " represented the pollen masses as being four in number and concave - convex , so that by lying in pairs, side by side, each pair formed a hollow body." This hollow body suggested the generic name. Later, a study of living material showed that Bauer was in error on several points , including the " hollow structure ."
