ceratostylis ruba

ceratostylis ruba

The small epiphytic orchids of the genus Ceratostylis form attractive clusters.Their popularity with collectors is enhanced by their small,gaudy-colored flowers that often appear in larger quantities on the spike. The species C.rubra has single or poorly branched stems covered with a brown membranous casing. The showy brick -red flowers with an almost invisible white lip are only 0.8 in/2 cm in diameter . They appear singly or in small groups in the axils of the leaves. Grow this plant epiphytically in a moderately damp semi -shade; as its roots are very tender, it needs to be mounted in a layer of moss. Flowerpot cultivation is not recommended because the roots have a tendancy to mold. The flowers appear irregularly several times a year . The plant's natural habitat is in the Philippines.
