Baptistonia echinataBaptistonia echinata orchid is a very rare epiphyte, it is closely related to the genus Oncidium. which is the only representative of the whole genus and is a very sought -after collector's item for it's interestingly shaped flowers. The pseudobulbs are cylindrical ,only 1.2-4in /3-10cm across and with1-2 leaves at the top. The leaves are prolonged andup to 6in/ 15 cm long. The overhanging flower spikes often branch out and bear numorous flowers - many more in the wild than when cultivated. The tiny flowers of this orchdi are partly open ,usually yellow , with a dark purple lip. The epiphytic method of cultivation is more advisable for this orchid than flowerpot cultivation; the plants prosper in semi-shade on a cork slab preferably with a little moss. After the pseudobulbs mature, the plant should be allowed a brief drier period of rest. The blooming period of this plant is in the winter and in the spring. The original home of the orchid is Brazil.
