Bifrenaria harrisoniae

Bifrenaria harrisoniae

Bifrenaria harrisoniae orchids resemble the genus Lycaste in their morphology and type of blooming. The difference between them consists in the smaller size of the flowers and the fact that their lip is hairy. Bifrenaria harrisoniae is the best known species of the genus which numbers a total of 20 species , and is the most widely cultivated species. The plant creates quardrangular pseudobulbs that reach a height of up to 3.2 in /8 cm and bear one broadly oval, tough , indeciduous leaf which can be up to 12 in/30 cm long.Between 2-3 yellowish flowers grow on erect inflorescence from the basis of the pseudobulbs. They are fairly large (2.8 in /7 cm), with a showy spur- shaped ''chin''. The lip is purple and covered with a thick layer of hairs. Cultivation is easy. The species Bifrenaria harrisoniae blooms between March and May and its original home is in the wild natural environment of Brazil.
