Brassia longissima

Brassia longissima species as it latin name suggests has the longest tepals (namely, the lateral sepals) of all the members of the genus. It overhang downward and can be up to 8 in /20 cm long! The remaining flower parts have a slightly more modest apperance-the elongated heart-shaped lip is inexpressive and whitiish, the other tepals are barely half as long as the previouly mentioned record breakers. The elegantly distributedbrown spots that standout nicely aganist the yellow backdrop proviceadditional embellishment . The erect inflorescence numbering 10-15 flowers grows out of the base of the flat pseudobulbs, and can reach a length of 24 in /60 cm. The leaves are rather long ,which makes Brassia longissima unsuitable for small collections kept in a limited space. . It requirs lot of sunlight and , inorder to achive regular blooming in the spring or summer(May - July), a period of rest. The original home of this orchid is Costa Rica , panama,and Ecuador and Peru.
