cattleya intermedia

Along with the species C.bowringiana, this is the most widely cultivated bifoliate Cattleya . Itis popular in spite of the fact that it blooms in the summer - a season that is unfovourable from a cultivator's perpective. The pseudobulbs are rather large-up to 16 in /40 cm long . The inflorescence is made up of 3-7 pale pinkish purple flowers with purple venation and a yellow spot in the throat . Apart from its typical form, the species has several varities and deviations that are significant both genitically and for cultivation. The popular albinos are worth a remark , as well as a flower anomaly termed aquini. Its petals are the same color as the lip ,and it has been used by breeders to produce a large number of attractive hybrids(known as aquini-types). The species blooms between May and August and comes from Brazil.
