dendrobium-sulawesiense

An unfulfilled dream of many an orchid admirer,D. sulawesiense

is a very beautiful ,but unfortunately rare species . Its stem pseudobulbs are not very thick ;they are up to 14 in/ 35 cm long and are usually shed after the growth period is over (although this is by no means a rule). Clusters of fabulous ,largish flowers grow out of the internodes of the upper part of the mature pseudobulbs. The belt -shaped flowers light up their sorroundings with their pinkish -purple color . The tepals are extended backward in the lower part of the flower, thus forming a spur -like protuberance. The flowers appear in the spring and early summer. The species is native to the Sulawesi region in Indonesia.
