This species closely related to E.ciliare or E.falcatum -all three of them are ,because of their unique -shaped white flowers ,sometimes classified as members of an independent genus Auliza. E. oerstedii has an erect stem whose highest two internodes are transformed into an elongated pseudobulb. An apical inflorecence grows out of the shortened spike and bears 2-3 flowers . The flowers are up to 4.4 in/ 11 cm across,their tepals are narrow and pointed , and the lips are three -lobed . The middle lobe on the lip is thin , pointed and very intensively elongated - a characteristic feature of the species . The plant is suitable even for novice cultivators . Grow it epiphytically in semi-shade and with year-round watering . The flowers appear in the spring . The specied was discovered in Costa Rica and Panama.
