eria

Representatives of this numerous genus(500 species )not very popular with orchid growers and lovers of floral beauty. An overwhelming majority of them have minuscule, plain flowers that ,moreover appear unwillingly and irregularly in cultivation . Only staunch collection of orchid curiosities will settle for some species with showier -shaped pseudobulbs . There are two types of pseudobulbs ; multi-jointed ,covered with leaves along the whole length on the one hand ,and mono-jointed,oval-to -cylindrical one with two or more leaves on the apex. Most Eria orchids are epiphytes of the warmest localities -in a culture they should therefore be mounted on bare suspended wooden supports. The plants need as much light as possible and a slight reduction of temperature in winter. The photographs of the species represented here were taken in Vietnam and Thailand ;the genus is widespred all over the tropical Asia,in Polynesia and northen Australia.
