Gennaria diphylla

An unobtrusive green-flowered orchid that used to be classified as a member of the genus Orchis .It is the only representative of the genus Gennaria and one of the 8 orchid species inhabiting the Canary Islands .Its scape bears two staggered clinging leaves and sparse inflorescence .It has a special ability to grow daughter underground tubers on root protrusions that expand to the distance of 3.3 ft /1 m away from the maternal plant. The newly formed specimens produce a single leaf and bloom after the lapse of several years.G. diphylla blooms between January and April . It grows in the western part of the Canaries and further east on Madeira ,in the west Mediterranean ,Sardinia and Corsica.
