An orchid attractive for cultivation that has been grown abundantly for many years ,with a showy purple shell-shaped ,reversed lip(see also the flowering species). Its slim, oval pseudobulbs are 2.4-4 in/6 -10 cm long and bear two lanceolate leaves that reach lengths of up to 8 in / 20 cm . The inflorescence is rather short and erect and consists of 5-8 flowers that open gradually one by one. The lip is complemented with lineated yellow -and-green tepals. It is highly variable and very adaptable epiphyte . It can br grown either on a support or in an epiphytic medium in a flowerpot . Flowers appear in the fall and winter and the plant is known to grow in a vast area of Central America including the West Indies .
