hormidium-vitellinum

In contrast to other species of the genus Hormidium ,H. vitellinum is considerably more cryophilic ;thanks to this quality ,as well as for its showy flowers ,it used to be grown for cut flowers at the dawn of protection gardening . Its pseudobulbs are egg-shaped , up to 3.6 in./ 9 cm long and equipped with two tough thin leaves on the apex. The erect ,12-in /30 -cm-tall inflorescence bears up to 20 shiny orange flowers ,1.2 -2 in/3-5 cm in diameter. The plants thrive in a light and well-ventilated environment . In the winter,it necessary to provide the plant with conditions for a substantial dormancy period. Based on the time when the plants are in bloom ,scientists distinguish between two varities : the plants of the variety autumnalis flower in the fall, whereas spring flowering is guaranteed by the var.majus.
