laelia-fournierii

laelia-fournierii

This dwarf species is a good example of the remarkable adaptability of orchids -for it is occasionally found growing on completely barren ,sun-drenched rock plates! If growing on rocks ,the plant reduces its proportion to the smallest size possible : its unifoliate ,barrel-shaped pseudobulbs are barely 1.6 in/ 4 cm long ,its fleshy ,tough leaf is even shorter . The flowers are whitish -to- pale -yellow ,with a yellowish -to-orange lip. In epiphytic stations, the plants are somewhat bigger. Cultivaton of this highly extreme species is quite problematic,as the plants are deprived of a sufficient amount of light in a green house environment of the Temperate Zone. There have been attempts to cultivate it on stone slabs ,and it is also possible to use cork bark . L. fournierii blooms in the summer and fall and comes from Brazil.
