A giant among Laelia orchids -its unifoliate ,slim, egg-shaped pseudobulbs are up to 8 in /20 cm long,and the leaves are even twice as long! The short flower spikes bears 3-5 very large (up to 6in /15 cm),mauve flowers. The lip is long and tubular ,with wavy edge, it is yellow on the inside and crimson with dark venation on the edges . The color of L. purpurata is highly variable ;so far ,approximately 50 varities have been described. Cultivation is easier than that of the previous species . A cool winter break is unnecessary ,and the plant's light needs are also slightly lower.L . purpurata blooms between May and October and its habitat is in Brazil.
