mediocalcar

mediocalcar

Representatives of this genus that has not yet been very systematically described are beautiful dwarfed orchids and highly sought -after cultivation rarites. They are not attractive only for their unusual bell-shaped flowers but also for the extraordinary morphology of their bodies . The clustered plants form pseudobulbs-like cylindrical stems that grow either out of a trailing rhizome or from the apex of the preceding shoot(see the plant with the yellow- and - orange flowers in the photo, resembling somewhat the species M. decoratum); the later instance is much less common . 1-5 short ,succulent leaves adorn the apices of the stems. One or several yellow-and -orange ,white or red flowers grow on the spikes. Growing these small epiphytes is not difficult . Mount the plants in a layer of moss on a wooden support and place them in a warm (temperate in winter),moist environment . Flowers appear irregularly ,mostly in the winter and spring . Most Mediocalcar orchids (a total of about 50 species )come from the medium altitudes of New Guinea.
