psychopsis krameriana

psychopsis krameriana

Common Name - Kramer's Psychopsis [German Orchid Gardner 1800's]

psychopsis krameriana is one of the species that were included in the Oncidium genus until 1982 . Only then was it (mainly on account of the bizarre anatomy of tis flowers ) transffered by taxonamists to a small genus that now contains 5 species . The plant is a darling as to appearance ,cultivation demands and proportions -its egg-shaped ,1.6 in/ 4 cm tall pseudobulbs bear a single firm ,elongated ,elliptic leaf covered with red dots ;single flowers appear repeatedly on 20 -in /5o -cm long spikes (that is why the spikes should not be removed ). The psychopsis krameriana flowers are real freaks of nature : they attract attention above all by an antenna -like erect trio of dark -red tepals resembling a butterfly's antennae (it is no coincidence that the generic names is derived from the greek word''psychi''meaning ''butterfly ''). The wings of a butterfly can be seen in the lateral wavy ,yellow -and- brown tepals . The broad lip is wavy as psychopsis papilio. The plant blooms irregularly throughout the year . psychopsis krameriana is native to Costa Rica ,Panama,Colombia and Ecuador .
