Schomburgkia tibicinis

Common Name - Flute Player's Schomburgkia

The genus Schomburgkia is impossible to overlook due to its showy flowers and robust ,goldish -yellow bifoliate Pseudobulbs . Its pseudobulbs are hollow ,hosting friendly colonies of ants and are reputed to have once been used as primitive musical instruments by Native Americans (hence the Latin name ''tibicina'' meaning ''flute player ''.) Schomburgkia tibicinis has stiff succulent flowers colored in a sophisticated compination of brown and purple ,yellow and whitish shades . The plants do not grow a lot of roots and whitish shades . The plnts do not grow a lot of roots and therefore ,ideally ,they should be cultivated epiphytically on a some what large ''head'' of grapevine. Many growers complain that their specimens of Schomburgkia tibicinis have refused to bloom several years in a row;this is caused mainly by insufficient direct sunlight and a repeted and frequent division of the clusters . The species flowers in late spring and comes from the countries of the Central American isthmus bordered by Mexico and Costa Rica .
