Tolumnia

Tolumnia

Tomunia is an extremely well species. Tolumnia varigata - the only problem being that it is known by the scientifically invalid name Oncidium variegatum . From Oncidium orchids , however ,Toluminas differ in the morphology of their green parts ,some details in the flower morphology ,as well as the number of chromosomes . In a flowerless state ,the two genera are very much alike, and they are difficult to classify since they readily crossbreed . There are differnet types of Tolumnia atottal of abut 30 form small, almost dwarfed pseudobulbs or short stems bearing fan -shaped leaf rosettes . The leaves with serrated edges and sharp -pointed tips have adapted to life in dry hot stations -they are very firm and tough . The showy flowers are colored in a combination of yellow ,brown, red and white and they grow on wiry stiff, oftern branched multi-flowered spikes .The lip dwarfed the other tepals by its proportions and it is oftern marked by a very complex ,species -specific morphology

Growing orchids of Tolumnia genus requires special care. They require a lot of sunlight, warmth and air movement. It is always recommended to grow these plants as epiphytes. although Tolumnia can be cultivated in pots the plants tend to bloom less. The plants are better off in the garden during summer and during winter stagnation, a reduction in temperature is recommended along with reduced misting. Tolumnia plants blooms irregularly and the original home of these orchids are the Caribbean islands.
