Orchidologists - The Makers of Orchid History

From its commencement over a century and a half ago the history of orchid cultivation is replete with details of wonder and interest . The facts concerning the introduction of orchids to European glasshouses and gardens ,the difficulties necessarily overcome before their cultivation was properly understood , and the long list of illustrious names who have each played an important part in orchidology , all combine to make the history of the Orchid Family an absorbing and unique study.

Interesting stories of accomplishment and adventure dramatize the lives and careers of those noteworthy men involved in the hostory of orchids. Some will be seen as pioneers forging through unexplored regions and , as a result , adding to an expanding knowledge of gergraphy, ecology , taxonamy , and natural science . Others , flourishing with the crest of orchid interest prevalent in the middle 1800 s , established markets of demand and supply in the fields are honored for their technical contributions toward the development of scientific orchid study . The legacy which they have collectively bequeathed to present-day orchidists has added immensely to out knowledge of the orchid flora of the far reaches of the earth .

In most instances the major figures involved in the progression of achievement in orchidology have been humble , self -effacing , dedicated persons . Their accomplishments weren't always widely recognized of known-nor attended by plaudits and praise . Their lot in life was not always comfortable , particularly those who worked and collected in the wilds . Most of them left this life having never gained fame or fortune, and a few evev died in near poverty. Yet, despite the infirmities and misfortune that befall many, it is almost certain that not one of them could have been as well satisfied in any other chosen field . Considering them as a body ,the leading figures of orchid history have assuredly been a diverse and heterogeneous combination of courage, stamina , talent , devotely involved in orchid interests, and each-has added invaluable data to the benefit of ensuring generations of orchidists.
