Breeding in Phalanopsis

Breeding in Phalanopsis

Programmes of improvement on this genus have been along three different lines- towards a pure white form, towards a pure pink form and towards white forms with pink lips.

Phalanopsis aphrodite and Phalanopsis amabilis were the two earliest species introduced into cultivation . Hybridisation of Phalanopsis amabilis with Phalanopsis formosana ,which is free -flowering and pure white in colour , produced superior , pure white hybrids like x Phalanopsis . Riea x Phalanopsis . Ann Marie.

Phalanopsis schilleriana ,Phalanopsis . sanderiana and Phalanopsis . lueddemanniana played prominent roles in the production of the pink Phalanopsis hybrid . x Phalanopsis Alice Bowen , x Phalanopsis . Pink Vision etc. are some of the best pink hybrids produced .

Phalanopsis . Intermedia from Philippines was a natural hybrid between P. aphrodite and Phalanopsis equestris and had white flowers with pink lips. But the flowers were small and fragile . Phalanopsis . equestris was mated with some of the amabilis bybrids of high quality and this resulted in fine hybrid with white flowers and pink lips like x Phalanopsis Roselle.
